Guitar Notes and Positions on the Fretboard

Guitar Notes and Positions is an approach to understanding and knowing the positions on the fretboard. If you need to learn more on this lesson kindly go to Music Theory and learn the examples there, click to go to Music Theory lesson.


Music Theory

The previous lesson on music theory has explained all the strings covering from the 1st to the 6th string. All the notes on the fretboard, and all the names of the notes. We will now explore further on guitar notes and positions on the fretboard.

Guitar Notes and Fret Positions

This guitar notes and positions pdf file contains all the notes from the 1st-6 strings.

Starting on the 1st open String, E note, then F on the 1st fret, G note on the 3rd fret,

A note on the 5th fret, B note on the 7th fret, C note on the 8th fret, D note on the 10th fret, E note on the 12th fret, F note on the 13th fret, G note on the 15th fret, A note on the 17th fret and B note on the 19th fret.

All notes from the 12 fret E note onwards are similar notes to the 0 open string except that it is an Octave higher in pitch.

Starting on the 2nd String

2nd string B is the open note, C on the 1st fret, D on the 3rd fret, E on the 5th fret, F on the 6th fret, G on the 8th fret,

A on the 10th fret, B on the 12th fret, C on the 13th fret D on the 15th fret, E on the 17th fret and F on the 18th fret.

Remember all notes above the 12 fret repeats itself an octave higher.

Starting on the on the 3rd String

G is the open note, A on the 2nd fret,B on the 4th fret, C on the 5th fret, D on the 7th fret, E on the 9th fret,F on the 10th fret, G on the 12th fret, A on the 14th fret, B on the 16th fret, C on the 17th fret and D on the 19th fret.

All notes above the 12th position repeats itself.

Starting on the 4th String

Dis the open note, E on the 2nd fret, F on the 4th fret, A on the 7th fret, B on the 9th fret, C on the 10th fret,D on the 12th fret, E on the 14th fret, F on the 15th fret, G on the 17th fret and A on the 19th fret.

Starting on the 5th String

A is the open note, B on the 2nd fret, C on the 3rd fret, D on the 5th fret, E on the 7th fret, F on the 8th fret, G on the 10th fret,A on the 12th fret, B on the 14th fret,C on the 15th fret, D on the 17th fret, E on the 19th fret.

All notes above the 12th position repeats itself.

Starting on the 6th String

E is the open note, F on the 1st fret, G on the 3rd fret, A on the 5th fret, B on the 7th fret, C on the 8th fret, D on the 10th fret, E on the 12th fret,F on the 13th fret, G on the 15th fret, A on the 17th fret, and B on the 19th fret.

Mix Exercises on guitar notes and positions.

This exercise is to help to get you familiarized with all the notes and positions on the fret-board. Note the low notes like E F, G and A and try to remember the positions that are used.

Refer to the above exercises and practice your way through it. All the notes from measure 1-10 are written in Quarter notes, from the middle of measure 10 onwards the notes are written in eight notes.

Observe and memorize the fret-board and see where the various notes are on the fret-board.
