Christmas Guitar Melodies

Christmas guitar playing - how to approach Christmas melodies in an easy and approachable way.

Example: Guitar Playing for Deck the Halls

This song Deck the Halls is an old Welsh air by John Parry Ddall, a Welsh harpist. It is still popular today and is still used as a dance tune. Even Mozart used this melody in a piano and violin concerto.

This melody is in the key of C Major. The chords are written at the top of the melody and the notes are written in block style. The tabs will help you figure out the notes and chords and with these written out you'll be having fun playing out the chords and melody.

In measure 1 and 2 of this Christmas guitar music, we have the chords F/G, G, E/G and Db/G, E/G, F/G and G7#5 forming the introduction of the song. Note the positions of these triads over the melody.

In measure 3 we have the melody with the chords C and G7. Take note of the triplets - these three notes are played in one count. (Take note of the tabs for fingerings and positions.)

In measure 4 we have a C, Bdim, Ami and F#mi7b5 chord, the B diminish chord is written as B, D F G# and the F#mi7b5 chord requires a little stretch. It is basically an Ami6 chord.

In measure 5 we have an F/G, C/G and G7 chords, with the G note used in the bass.

In measure 6 there is the C/G, G7 and C chord and there is the two dots showing the repeat sign back to measure 3.

Chorus of Deck the Halls:

In Measure 7 of holiday guitar music for Deck the Halls, the chorus of the song begins. The chords G7, C/G, G7 and B/G are used. The B/G chord adds a nice color to the melody and approaches nicely to the Ami chord. Take note of the tabsif you have a problem with the notes.

In measure 8 we have an Ami, Bb/A, Ami and E7b9b5. The E7b9b5 is written as E, Bb, F, G# and D and it's an interesting chord. It acts as a V7b9b5 of the V1mi chord.

In measure 9 there is an Ami, F, Ami, F, G, and Ami chord. All of these triads sound good and should be committed to memory. Try learning and apply all these chord shapes to other interesting melodies.

Adding flavor to festive guitar playing, measure 10 has a D69, D7, G7#5 and C#7b5 chords. The D7, G7#5, and C#7b5 chords are all dominant chords. In the G7#5 the notes G,B.D# and F are used to spell the chord and for the C#7b5 the notes used are C#, B, D# and G. Watch the tabs for fingerings and positions.

Measure 11 has a C, F/G, C and G chords.

In measure 12 a C, Bdim, Ami, and F#mi7b5 chords are used vertically from the melody.

Measure 13 uses a F/G, C/G and G7 chords. These support the melody nicely.
