Acoustic Guitar Tablature

What is this system called Acoustic Guitar Tablature? Why is it thus named? Is it important to learn tabs? In what ways will guitar tablature be beneficial to me? Are there any differences between acoustic and electric guitar tablatures?

Acoustic Guitar Tablature Explained

The simple answer is that tablature is a method of notating guitar music. It compliments the treble stave. Tablatures indicate the positions for the notes, chords and symbols.

Tabs were first used in the 1400 and it was used for the lute. Although tablature is not as perfect as the conventional music system, it is a source of help to aspiring self-taught and accomplished guitar players. Apart from not having note values attached to it, reading acoustic guitar tablature is the same for both the acoustic and electric guitars.

On the left of the tablature, there are six horizontal lines representing the six strings of the guitar. These lines form a stave where all the symbols and numbers are written on them.

On its right, the conventional guitar tuning is used. It is labeled from the top 1st string E to the low 6th string E. The 0 symbol signifies an open string. The notes on the staff show the six open strings of the guitar.

Symbols are used in tablature to indicate values, rhythms and fret positions.

Numbers and the Fretboard

In acoustic guitar tablature, numbers are placed on the tablature stave to represent the frets and positions to approach. This is done to indicate precisely where and what positions to use. In the conventional music system, there is no problems with note values.

In acoustic guitar tablature very rarely are note values indicated, although sometimes some adventurous person might use it. This is done by combining a treble stave and a tablature stave together.

The Acoustic Guitar Tablature 2.

In this diagram single-notes are used. These are approached from left to right.

The 1st measure has a C note written on the 1st and 2nd beats. It is played on the 5th string, 3rd fret.

The 3rd note E is played on the 4th string, 2nd fret. The 4th note G is played on the 3rd, open string.

The 2nd measure, 1st beat is an A note played on the 3rd string, 2nd fret 1st beat.

The F note is played on the 4th string, 3rd fret 2nd beat.

The D note is played on the 4th open string on the 4th beat.

The A note is played on the 4th beat, 5th open string.

The 3rd measure has a D note. It is played on the 4th open string.

The G note is played on the 2nd beat, on the 3rd open string.

The B note is played on the 2nd open string.

The C note is played on the 2nd string, 1st fret.

Guitar Tablatures and Note-Values:

To simplify this, I have included the Treble stave to assist with the note values.

The treble stave shows the notes and its values. This will give you an idea of the values to use for the Tabs.

Note the down and up strokes used for picking the notes. The down-up strokes are an important technique to develop.

Acoustic Guitar Tablature and Chords:

The chords are stacked vertically down. The numbers on the strings indicate the positions and frets to be used.

In the 4th measure, an AMaj9 chord is outlined. Note the positions, numbers and strings to play.

The 5th measure has a G chord outlined, view the positions and frets played.

Arpeggios:

Arpeggios are basically broken chords. Broken chords are notes taken from the chords to inject spice into the playing. It is a very useful tedchnique to develop. It is used for accompaning singers, instrumental music, etc.

Hammer ons, Pull-Offs, Vibrato, Slides.

These are used to create more style, color and character into ones playing. Most of the acoustic guitar songs of today do incorporate a lot of symbols.

Symbols Used in Acoustic Guitar Tablature:

The s/ indicates to slide up to the note.

The s indicates to slide down to a note.

V - above a note indicates the use of vibrato.

t- tap with the right-hand.

Hammer on - are written with a H.

m- mute for a percussive effect.

X- signifies to mute the strings.

b- bend the string up a 1/2 or 1 whole step as indicated.

r- release the bend a 1/2 or 1 whole step to the next note.

p- pull-off from the note to the note required.

0- over a note indicates the use of harmonics.
